Lot 240: A Collection of Vintage Playboy Magazines and Period Suitcase
An assortment of vintage Playboy: Entertainment for Men magazines, dating from the late 1960s to the early 1970s, presented in a period container. The collection includes the December 1967 Gala Christmas Issue, which features a distinctive psychedelic cover illustration in vibrant shades of pink, green, and orange. This issue lists prominent literary and cultural contributors including Kenneth Tynan, Arthur Miller, Saul Bellow, P.G. Wodehouse, and John Cheever. Also present is the December 1970 issue with a festive-themed cover depicting a model in a Santa hat, featuring content on Movie Sex Stars of 1970 and Underground Comix. A January 1972 issue is partially visible, alongside a fourth issue featuring a blue cover with the white rabbit head logo. The magazines are produced using offset lithography on gloss paper. The items are housed in a vintage, tan-coloured hard-shell suitcase with a fabric-lined interior and internal retention straps. This group represents a significant era for the publication, which was noted for its combination of high-calibre investigative journalism, literary fiction, and artistic glamour photography.
Condition report:
The magazines are in overall good vintage condition with signs of age-related wear including minor creasing to the covers, edge wear, and light surface scuffing. The December 1967 issue shows more significant wear along the spine. The suitcase is in fair to poor condition, exhibiting notable staining, foxing, and fraying to the internal fabric lining, alongside general exterior wear and oxidation to the metal hardware and latches.
