Lot 92: A Scottish Mahogany Longcase Clock by James Whitelaw, Edinburgh, Early 19th Century

Buyer's Premium:

A 19th-century Scottish longcase clock, the dial signed Ja. Whitelaw Edinburgh. The mahogany case is embellished with flame mahogany veneers and boxwood or satinwood string inlay. The hood features a swan-neck pediment decorated with two brass rosettes and a central turned brass finial, flanked by fluted columns with brass capitals. The arched, white-painted dial is decorated with a floral and fruit still life in the lunette. The main chapter ring displays black Roman numerals for the hours and an outer track for minutes. The dial includes a subsidiary seconds dial below the twelve o’clock position and a date aperture above the six o’clock position. The hands are crafted from ornate pierced metal. The trunk contains a shaped door, and the clock sits upon a plinth base. The movement is a mechanical weight-driven type, characteristic of the period.


Condition report:

The clock is presented in an uncleaned state. The mechanical working status is unknown and the movement is currently untested. Weights and pendulum are not visible in the images. There is minor wear and age-related marking to the wooden case consistent with age and use.
