An antique cast iron domestic balance scale set manufactured by W & T Avery of Birmingham. The instrument features a traditional central fulcrum mechanism mounted on a decorative stepped cast iron base with integral scrolled carrying handles at either end. It is equipped with two distinct pans: a large, deep-scoop-shaped pan for loose goods and a smaller, flat hexagonal pan designed for counterweights. The set is accompanied by a graduated series of six cast iron weights. The largest weight is embossed with a circular mark featuring a central crown symbol, flanked by the text W & T and AVERY. The weight denominations comprise 2 LB, 1 LB, 8 OZ, 4 OZ, 2 OZ, and 1 OZ.
Condition report:
The scales and weights exhibit visible surface oxidation and wear to the original darkened finish throughout, consistent with domestic use and age. The mechanical assembly appears complete and functional. Both pans are present and the set of weights is graduated as described.
