Lot 368C: An 18th or 19th Century Needlework Sampler by Hope Lovejoy and Elizabeth Smith
This antique needlework sampler features silk or wool embroidery on a linen ground. The textile contains a prominent religious verse beginning with the words Oh Christ our life I am the Resurrection saith the Lord and concludes with the names Hope Lovejoy and Elizabeth Smith. Decorative elements include stylised floral vines, a central tree, and various small geometric and architectural motifs. The embroidery is executed in a palette of muted greens, reds, and browns on a cream-coloured ground. The piece is currently mounted within a white window mat and secured under protective plastic wrap.
Condition report:
The sampler shows signs of age-appropriate toning and light staining throughout the cream-coloured fabric. There is minor fading to the pigmented threads consistent with the age of the textile. The item is currently sealed under plastic wrap which precludes a full inspection of the reverse and edges.
