This 19th-century large-format volume is an edition of Brown’s Self-Interpreting Family Bible, featuring the commentary of the Reverend John Brown of Haddington. The title page of this specific copy identifies the work as Cobbin’s Illustrated Family Bible and People’s Commentary, edited by the Reverend Ingram Cobbin, M.A., and published in London by Ward, Lock, and Tyler. The volume contains the Old and New Testaments in the Authorized Version, supplemented with numerous wood engravings, illustrations, marginal references, and various readings. The book is bound in heavily embossed black leather or textured cloth over boards. The front cover features a prominent central gilt-stamped sunburst design with a crown and banners inscribed with the text of Psalm 119:105: Thy Word is a Lamp unto my Feet and a Light unto my Path. The binding further displays ornate blind-stamped borders and corner roundels with religious motifs.
