Alfred Heaton Cooper (1866-1929), ‘Charcoal Burning at Bouth’, 1908. This 19th to early 20th-century landscape watercolor on paper depicts an atmospheric wooded scene. The composition features tall, sparse trees and several figures engaged in activity, consistent with woodcutting or charcoal burning, with a notable plume of smoke and primitive shelters in the background. Executed in a palette of muted blues, greys, and earthy browns, the artwork is protected under glass, matted with an off-white board, and housed in a gilded wood frame of simple profile. A signature, appearing to read “F. Sidney Cooper” or similar, is visible in the lower left corner of the artwork. A small white sticker bearing the number ‘7’ is affixed to the lower right corner of the frame.
