Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A 19th-century European School landscape painting executed in oil on board. The composition features a large, dark tree in the foreground to the right, framing a view across a body of water toward a white-walled building, likely a watermill or cottage. A low bridge or weir is visible in the mid-ground, with further structures and foliage beyond. The work is rendered in a traditional representational style using a dark, tonal palette with highlights of white and ochre on the building and sky. The application of paint is expressive and textural, particularly in the rendering of the clouds and foliage. The painting is housed in a substantial, period-style gilt-composite frame featuring a beaded outer edge, a deep cove, and an inner foliate-patterned slip. There are no visible signatures or inscriptions on the surface of the work in its current orientation.

Condition report:

The painting exhibits significant age-related wear and is in need of professional attention. A widespread network of fine craquelure is visible across the entire painted surface. There is a layer of surface dirt and discoloured varnish throughout. Several areas of paint loss and abrasion are present, most notably along the upper edge and near the corners. The gilt frame shows signs of wear, including small chips and losses to the composite decoration, particularly at the corners and along the beaded edge. The structural integrity of the frame appears sound, although there is visible dust and grime in the recessed areas.
