Lot 217: An Assortment of Earthenware and Glazed Ceramic Mugs and Vessels
A collection of ceramic tableware and utility vessels, primarily comprising earthenware mugs and cups. The principal item is a white earthenware cup decorated with a multi-coloured transfer print titled TYKES MOTTO. The decoration features a heraldic shield divided into four quadrants containing a bird, a sheep, a bee, and an insect, below which is a dialect motto reading MAY WE NIVVER WANT NOWT, NONE ON US, NOR ME NAWTHER. The side displays further text including Eat all, sup all, pay nowt. The cup is designed with a flaring cylindrical body, a large ring handle, and a gold-tone gilt line to the rim.
The lot also includes a white ceramic mug with black block lettering reading MY FEE, and an octagonal ceramic vessel finished with a pink and green sponge-decorated glaze. Also present is a group of various other vessels including a cream-speckled glazed mug with a brown rim, a plain white saucer, and several further glazed mugs in white and brown tones. No maker’s marks or backstamps are visible on the bases of these items as they are presented in a cardboard tray. An orange adhesive price sticker is present on the side of one white mug.
Condition report:
The items show signs of domestic use and storage wear. The Tykes Motto cup displays visible wear and thinning to the gilt rim decoration. Surface crazing is evident on the interior and exterior of several pieces, including the white MY FEE mug and the octagonal sponge-decorated vessel. Minor surface scratches and stacking wear are present across the collection consistent with loose storage in a tray. No major chips or structural cracks are visible from the primary angles provided.
