Lot 42: A Collection of Vintage Smoking Accessories, Folding Opera Glasses, and Manual Hair Clippers
An assortment of vintage personal grooming and smoking items. The collection features a table lighter set comprising a grey and white veined marble cylindrical lighter and a matching circular ashtray. A pair of folding opera glasses is included, housed in its original red cardboard box which is printed with 2.5 X 25 m/m FOLDING OPERA GLASS. An English manual hair clipper is contained within a blue and white illustrated box; the clipper handle is impressed with MADE IN ENGLAND. A rectangular metal tray contains several pocket lighters including an engine-turned silver-tone example, a textured lighter in a grey presentation box, and a large rectangular vest pocket case. This case features an engraved oval cartouche reading JAS.A.JOHNSTONE Phones 297 & 494 FLEETWOOD. The tray also includes a small brass-tone cylindrical canister, a pair of folding nail clippers, and a smaller polished metal cylindrical lighter.
Condition report:
The items show varying degrees of wear consistent with age and use. The marble ashtray and lighter base appear intact with natural stone variations (photo 1). The opera glass box shows significant edge wear, scuffing, and some loss to the red surface layer (photo 1). The hair clipper box is heavily worn with crushed corners and surface abrasions (photo 1). The manual hair clippers exhibit surface oxidation and tarnishing to the chrome-plated finish (photo 1). The pocket lighters in the metal tray show surface scratches, minor pitting, and oxidation, particularly to the engine-turned and polished metal surfaces (photo 1). Mechanical components are untested.
