Lot 34: Two Cased Sets of Silver Plated Flatware comprising Six Cake Forks and Six Teaspoons
A collection of silver-plated flatware presented in two separate cases. The first set comprises six pastry or cake forks, each featuring three tines and a handle decorated with a stylized foliate motif at the terminal. Small, impressed marks are present on the reverse of the fork handles near the tines, but the characters are not legible as a name or specific hallmark. The forks are housed in a brown textured presentation case with a cream-coloured satin and velvet-lined interior.
The second set comprises six teaspoons with handles featuring a simple stepped or ridged design at the terminal. An adhesive paper label is included within the case, printed with a Lifetime Guarantee stating the items are heavily plated with pure silver; however, no specific manufacturer’s name is readable on the spoons or the guarantee slip. The spoons are held in a grey and red presentation case. Small adhesive orange and white inventory labels are present on the items and cases, which are part of the auction process and not the items themselves.
Condition report:
Both sets exhibit significant surface tarnish and oxidation across the metal surfaces, appearing as dark grey, purple, and brown discolouration (photo 1). The cake forks show heavy tarnish concentrated on the tines and the lower portion of the handles. One teaspoon is displaced from its original slot within the case. The interior linings of both cases show signs of wear and light staining, and the exterior of the cases displays shelf wear consistent with age and use.
