Lot 202: Two Antique Metalware Items Comprising a Brass Handled Fireplace Poker and a Brass Garden Syringe

Buyer's Premium:

A pair of antique metalware implements consisting of a fireplace poker and a manual garden syringe. The fireplace poker is constructed with a wrought iron shaft and a cast, turned brass handle of baluster form terminating in a spherical finial. The horticultural syringe comprises a brass cylinder with a turned wooden plunger handle finished in red paint. The wooden handle features a series of regularly spaced circular indentations. An orange adhesive label attached to the brass cylinder is handwritten with the characters 202. A small white adhesive label on the wooden handle is printed with the character 1. The brass handle of the fire poker displays two small patches of white adhesive residue. No maker marks, stamps, or hallmarks are visible on either item.


Condition report:

The iron shaft of the fireplace poker exhibits heavy, uniform surface rust and pitting throughout its length (photo 1). The brass handle of the poker shows moderate tarnish and surface patination (photo 1). The brass cylinder of the garden syringe displays significant oxidation and verdigris across the majority of the surface (photo 1). The red painted finish on the wooden syringe handle shows heavy wear, chipping, and significant loss (photo 1). The functional condition of the internal syringe plunger is unknown.
