Lot 528: A Regency Mahogany Hall Chair with Painted Nautical Medallion
A Regency mahogany hall chair featuring a dark polished finish. The waisted shield-shaped backrest contains a centrally inset oval medallion. This medallion is hand-painted with a nautical motif depicting a black fouled anchor entwined with rope and a red-and-white striped buoy on a pale green ground. The chair includes a solid shaped wooden seat and is supported by ring-turned front legs and splayed rear legs. A white rectangular adhesive label on the backrest bears the handwritten characters 4 4, and a yellow rectangular adhesive sticker displays the printed numerals 528.
Condition report:
The chair exhibits signs of age and frequent use throughout. There are numerous scratches, scuffs, and small nicks to the mahogany finish, particularly concentrated on the seat, the edges of the backrest, and the turned legs (photo 1). A prominent dark, irregular water mark or stain is visible on the centre-left of the seat (photo 1). The painted medallion shows fine surface cracking (craquelure) and minor losses to the paint consistent with age (photo 2). A visible gap in the joinery appears where the back rail meets the seat (photo 1).
