Lot 297: A Collection of Woven Wicker and Straw Items including a Netted Tote Bag and Baskets
A collection of functional items constructed from natural fibres in varying brown tones. The group features a straw tote bag with a distinctive open-work lattice design, a scalloped upper rim, and two rounded woven top handles. The interior of the bag is fitted with a light blue textile lining. Also included is a large, shallow oval basket of wicker construction with integrated handles at each end, and a rectangular lidded wicker carrier or hamper which is nested within the larger basket. Accompanying these items is a dark-stained wooden box featuring metal hinges and a handle on the side. A small white rectangular adhesive label is affixed to the side of the rectangular wicker carrier, bearing the printed digits 2 2. No other maker marks, labels, or signatures are visible on any of the pieces.
Condition report:
The collection is in a used condition consistent with age. The wicker items show visible fraying, minor losses to individual strands, and general wear to the woven surfaces, particularly around the edges and handles (photo 1). The straw tote bag exhibits some loose fibres and light surface wear but appears structurally intact (photo 1). The wooden box shows surface scuffing, scratches, and wear to the finish, with signs of oxidation on the metal hardware (photo 1). All items show a light accumulation of dust and surface soiling.
