Lot 144: British School, 19th/20th Century, Mountain Landscape with Stone Bridge and Cottages, Watercolour on Paper
A topographical landscape watercolour on paper depicting a rugged mountain pass. The composition features a prominent, steep-sided peak rising above a valley containing several white-washed cottages and a traditional single-arch stone bridge spanning a river. The foreground is detailed with clusters of yellow flowering bushes, likely gorse, set against a palette of muted greens, purples, and browns. The work is presented within a white mount and housed in a decorative gilt-effect frame. An orange rectangular adhesive sticker on the mount reads 144. A small white rectangular adhesive sticker on the mount reads 2. There are no signatures or dates visible on the surface of the painting or the mount.
Condition report:
The paper exhibits overall toning and scatterings of foxing, which are most prominent in the sky portion of the image (photo 1). There is visible mat burn and discolouration along the edges where the paper meets the mount. The gilt-effect frame shows minor surface abrasions, dust, and wear consistent with age. The item is presented under glass, and the condition of the paper reverse has not been inspected.
