Lot 140: N. J. Hepworth, Rural Landscape with Stone Farmhouse, Watercolour on Paper, 1978
A traditional late 20th-century watercolour on paper depicting a rustic stone farmhouse or converted mill nestled within a lush garden landscape. The scene features a multi-level stone structure with an orange-tiled roof, partially obscured by mature green trees, with vibrant red and yellow shrubbery in the foreground set against a green lawn and low stone walls. The work utilizes transparent washes and fine brushwork to define texture in the masonry and foliage. A signature in the lower right corner is painted in dark pigment, reading N. J. HEPWORTH followed by three less distinct characters, and dated 78 below. The artwork is presented in a cream card mount and a simple light-coloured wood frame under glass. A small white rectangular label with the number 4 is adhered to the top right of the mount, and a small orange rectangular label reading 140 is adhered to the bottom right of the frame.
Condition report:
Scattered minor brown foxing spots are visible across the sky area and on the card mount (photo 1). The frame has light surface scuffs and minor abrasions consistent with age and handling (photo 1). Significant reflections on the glass in the photograph partially obscure the central portion of the artwork.
