Lot 138: Vintage carved wood safety rocking horse on glider stand

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A vintage safety rocking horse, also known as a glider horse, of carved wood construction with a painted red finish. The horse features a minimalist carved mane and tail with inset eyes. It is mounted via four metal swinging arms to two horizontal wooden rails, supported by four turned black-painted metal posts fixed to a black-painted wooden trestle base. The horse is fitted with a distressed leather-effect saddle featuring metal studs and one metal stirrup on a leather strap. A yellow rectangular adhesive label is present on the right side of the neck with handwritten characters that are not legible. A smaller white rectangular adhesive label is positioned below the yellow sticker, which is also not legible. No further maker’s marks, stamps, or labels are visible on the horse or the stand.

Condition report:

The red paint on the body shows significant chipping and loss, particularly on the underside and belly, with various scuffs and chips across the head and neck (photo 1). Several vertical cracks are visible in the wood on the chest and neck (photo 1). The leather-effect saddle is heavily worn with surface cracking and the metal studs show oxidation (photo 1). The bridle and reins are missing, and only one stirrup and strap are present (photo 1). The wooden rails of the stand show surface wear and the black-painted metal posts and wooden base exhibit significant paint loss and accumulated dirt (photo 1). The swinging mechanism appears complete but has not been tested for smooth operation.
