Lot 104: A Set of Cauldon Ware Transfer-Printed Earthenware Toilet Items
An assortment of Cauldon Ware earthenware toilet items featuring underglaze blue transfer-printed landscape decoration. The scenes depict a romanticised parkland setting with a stately home, lake, and mature trees, enclosed by ornate scrolled and foliate borders. The pieces are characterised by their faceted, octagonal bodies and scrolled handles. The group includes a large water jug with a faceted body and a matching wash basin. Also present are several chamber pots with single loop handles, a tall faceted toothbrush holder or vase, and a circular two-piece soap dish with a perforated draining insert. The base of the items features a blue printed mark consisting of a crown symbol above the words CAULDON WARE arranged in a downward-curving arc. Several pieces have orange rectangular adhesive labels attached to the glaze, including one reading 104 and another reading 4. A small white square label reading 4 is also visible on one chamber pot handle.
Condition report:
One chamber pot has a significant chip to the upper rim, measuring approximately 2.5cm in length (photo 1). The set exhibits signs of domestic use including fine surface scratches and occasional minor kiln grit inclusions under the glaze. There are no other visible cracks or repairs to the pieces shown. Orange and white adhesive labels are present on the surfaces of several items (photo 1, photo 2).
