Lot 31a: A 19th-century mahogany eight-day longcase clock by Jno Wignall of Ormskirk
This 19th-century longcase clock is constructed from mahogany with flame mahogany veneers and decorative inlay. The hood features a swan-neck pediment with brass paterae above an inlaid frieze depicting scrolling foliate motifs, supported by fluted columns. The trunk has a door with a shaped top and flame mahogany veneers, a brass escutcheon, and is flanked by fluted quarter columns. The base section is also finished with flame mahogany veneers and rests on a plain plinth. The square painted dial includes a central floral spray and floral spandrels at the corners. It is marked with Roman numerals for the hours and an outer ring of Arabic numerals for the minutes, with a semi-circular date aperture located above the centre. Two winding holes are present on the dial face. The dial features a hand-painted inscription in cursive script that reads Jno Wignall and ORMSKIRK on the line below. An orange adhesive label with the text 7 31A is attached to the top right of the dial glass.
Condition report:
The painted dial exhibits widespread fine crazing across the surface and localized paint loss, specifically around the winding holes and the perimeter (photo 2). The mahogany case shows surface wear including scuffs, scratches, and small indentations consistent with age and use (photo 1). The movement, weights, and pendulum are not visible in the images and have not been tested for functional accuracy.
