Lot 12: A Collection of Late 19th and Early 20th Century British Salt-Glazed Stoneware and Ceramic Utility Wares
A collection of domestic stoneware and ceramic utility items, predominantly finished in traditional salt glazes. The assortment includes a large globular stoneware crock featuring two small loop handles and a dark brown salt-glaze finish over an unglazed terracotta base, accompanied by a matching domed lid with a central knob handle. A white-glazed ceramic slipper bed pan is included, featuring black transfer-printed instructional text to the interior well reading THE NEW SLIPPER BED PAN This Slipper should be passed under the Patient in front between the legs. If a flannel cap is made for the back fastened by strings under the handle considerable comfort will be afforded. The collection further contains a medium-sized globular stoneware crock with two horizontal loop handles and a brown salt-glaze finish, alongside a cylindrical two-tone jar with a beige body and a mustard-coloured glazed shoulder and rim. A shallow brown-glazed ceramic bowl with two small lug handles contains a small, lightly glazed stoneware bottle. Most items bear small orange adhesive labels printed with the number 12 and small white adhesive labels printed with the number 13. Two large unglazed terracotta storage pots are also visible in the background.
Condition report:
A significant chip is present on the outer rim of the lid for the large brown crock (photo 1). The bed pan shows minor surface staining and light crazing consistent with age and use (photo 1). The remaining items exhibit typical utilitarian wear, including minor surface abrasions, small firing imperfections, and kiln scars. Adhesive lot stickers are present on all items.
