Lot 11: Antique Underwood Standard Typewriter
An antique standard desktop typewriter featuring a black-finished cast metal open frame. The manufacturer name Underwood is printed in serif lettering across the upper paper table, and UNDERWOOD is marked in block capitals on the front frame directly above the keyboard. The keyboard consists of four rows of circular glass-topped keys with metal rims arranged in a QWERTY layout. These include specialty keys marked BACK SPACER, TAB, SHIFT LOCK, and two SHIFT KEY buttons. A metal paper scale bar is positioned above the typebasket with green and white increments numbered from 10 to 120. The machine retains a black fabric ribbon. An orange adhesive label marked 11 is affixed to the centre of the paper table, and a small white rectangular adhesive label marked 13 is located on the right side of the carriage.
Condition report:
The typewriter is in poor cosmetic condition. There is a heavy accumulation of dust, lint, and cobwebs throughout the typebasket and mechanical interior (photo 1). The black fabric ribbon is loose, frayed, and tangled over the typebars (photo 1). Surface oxidation and rust are evident on several exposed metal components, including the carriage rods and the paper bail (photo 1). The mechanical functionality of the keys, carriage movement, and internal linkages is untested.
