Lot 9: Large 19th Century Heavy Gauge Brass Preserve Pan with Wrought Iron Handle
A large 19th-century heavy-gauge brass preserve pan or cooking pot of circular form. The vessel features a deep-sided body constructed from heavy brass, possibly spun or hammered, with a slightly everted rim. It is fitted with a substantial hand-wrought iron bail handle, which is secured to the body by two large rivets. The interior of the pot shows a bright finish with significant evidence of domestic use. No maker’s marks, stamps, or signatures are visible on either the interior or exterior surfaces.
Condition report:
The item is in sound structural condition with no major dents or splits visible. The exterior surface exhibits a dark, unpolished aged patina throughout (Photo 1). The interior shows bright brass with significant surface scratching and scuffing consistent with age and domestic use, including a notable area of green verdigris oxidisation on the base (Photo 1). The wrought iron handle shows surface rust and pitting typical for a piece of this age (Photo 1).
