Lot 281: Three J.W. Spear and Sons Vintage Scrabble Board Games
Three vintage Scrabble board games manufactured by J.W. Spear and Sons Ltd. in Enfield, Middlesex, England. The games are housed in rectangular cardboard boxes finished with a dark green printed paper covering. The top lids feature the Scrabble trademark in white block letters on a red rectangular ground, with Registered Trade Mark printed below. The lower edge of the lid contains the manufacturer’s details and location. The lower-left corner of the lid includes a copyright notice for the 1948 Production and Marketing Co. The Spear’s Games oval logo and the Scrabble title are printed on the lid sides. The uppermost box in the stack retains a white adhesive label with the handwritten number 2 and a fluorescent orange label with the number 281 in the top right corner.
Condition report:
The boxes exhibit significant signs of age and shelf wear. There is notable scuffing, rubbing, and loss of the green surface paper along the edges and corners of the lids, revealing the underlying brown cardboard. The box surfaces show light scratches and minor staining. As the boxes are closed, the completeness of internal components, including the boards, letter tiles, and racks, has not been verified.
