Lot 688: A Large Circular Primitive Wooden Barrel or Vat Cover
A large circular utilitarian cover constructed from several vertical wooden planks. The assembly is secured by two vertical battens and a central horizontal crossmember featuring a recessed centre designed to serve as a handle. The construction uses metal fasteners that show signs of oxidation. The timber displays a heavily weathered silver-grey patina with prominent grain separation and surface checking. An orange adhesive label with handwritten characters L 38 is adhered to the left vertical batten. A small white rectangular label printed with the numbers 11 11 is located near the lower centre of the object. Areas of white residue and staining are visible across the surface, consistent with age and previous industrial or agricultural use.

The item shows significant signs of age and utilitarian use. The wood exhibits a weathered patina with multiple cracks, surface checking, and separation between the planks. Metal fasteners are oxidised. Evidence of surface staining and white residue is present throughout. Adhesive labels remain on the surface.
