A Drexel Heritage black lacquer and relief-decorated furniture panel, likely a cabinet door, in the Chinoiserie style. The piece features a dark ebonised lacquer finish with elaborate raised relief scenes depicting traditional figures in landscape settings with pagodas, willow and pine trees, and cranes. The relief work shows vestiges of polychrome pigments and is detailed with fine gilt line work. These decorative scenes are enclosed within gilded double-line borders with stylised floral and geometric corner motifs. The panel is fitted with two mismatched knobs, one of green hardstone-style material and one of translucent white, and retains its original brass hinges.
Condition report:
The item exhibits significant wear and age-related damage. There are notable losses and chipping to the raised relief decoration, specifically on the figures and buildings. The black lacquer surface has numerous scuffs, surface scratches, and areas of ingrained dust. The gilded highlights are rubbed and faded across the panel. The knobs are mismatched and the brass hinges show signs of oxidation.
