Lot 645: A Hand-Painted Folk Art Softwood Blanket Chest
A rectangular softwood blanket chest constructed from simple planking with a hinged lid and a decorative scalloped base. The chest features a cream-coloured ground decorated with hand-painted folk-art motifs. The lid is adorned with a large central floral spray in shades of blue, green, and ochre. The front panel displays a central heart motif flanked by trailing foliate and floral scrolls with blue blossoms and green leaves. The edges of the lid and the shaped base are finished with a blue-painted trim. A small white rectangular label marked 1 1 1 1 is adhered to the top left corner, and a blurred orange label is present on the top right.
Condition report:
The chest shows significant age-related wear and distressing to the painted finish. There is extensive paint loss and rubbing, particularly on the top surface and along the blue-painted edges. The wood exhibits natural checking and surface cracking, most notably on the lid. General scuffs, scratches, and small indentations are present throughout, consistent with regular use.
