Lot 634: Mid-20th Century Chinese Hand-Knotted Wool Pile Peking Style Rug
A Chinese hand-knotted rug featuring a heavy wool pile on a cotton foundation. The rug is designed with a sage green central field and carved floral corner spandrels, enclosed by a wide cream-coloured border. The border is decorated with floral sprays, likely peonies and lotuses, in a palette of coral pink, light blue, and tan. The decorative elements are accented with traditional Chinese carving, where the pile is sculpted around the motifs to create a three-dimensional effect. The design incorporates stylized auspicious symbols, including a rectangular Shou longevity character positioned centrally within the lower border. The rug is finished with a thick, looped fringe.
Condition report:
The rug is in poor structural condition with several prominent horizontal splits and cracks running across the central field, which appear to penetrate through the foundation. These splits suggest severe dry rot or damage from being folded for an extended period. There is general wear and thinning to the pile throughout, along with areas of fading and minor staining. The fringe shows signs of age-related soiling and discolouration.
