Lot 580: Early 20th Century Oak Two Door Glazed Library Display Cabinet
A large early 20th century glazed library bookcase or display cabinet of solid oak construction with a dark stained finish. The unit features two large doors, each divided into six rectangular panes by wooden glazing bars, making a total of twelve glass panes. The doors are designed with a lift-up and slide-back mechanism, similar to larger-scale barrister-style library furniture. The interior is divided by a central vertical partition and contains fixed horizontal shelving with unfinished or lightly stained backboards. The doors are secured at the top with brass strap hinges and feature a central brass lock mechanism with a circular escutcheon and small integral knob. A small orange rectangular sticker bearing the digits 20 20 is affixed to the top-left glass pane. No manufacturer marks or labels are visible on the carcase.
Condition report:
The cabinet shows signs of significant age and use. There is widespread scuffing, surface scratches, and wear to the stained finish, particularly prominent along the edges and corners of the frame. The twelve glass panes appear intact but are heavily soiled with accumulated dust and grime. The interior wooden backboards exhibit some water staining and discolouration. Hardware appears original but the mechanical function of the sliding doors has not been tested.
