Lot 314: A Trio of Anne Anderson Illustrations for Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales
Anne Anderson (British, 1874 to 1952). A trio of colour-plate illustrations executed in watercolour and ink on paper, depicting scenes from the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen. The subjects comprise The Little Mermaid, captioned She saw her sisters rise out of the sea, The Tinder-Box, and The Garden of Paradise. The style is characteristic of the British Golden Age of illustration, featuring fine linework and delicate washes within decorative borders. Two illustrations are signed ANNE ANDERSON along the right edge of the central image. The plates include printed titles and a plate letter B, suggesting they were sourced from a published deluxe volume. Each is presented in a glazed dark wood frame with a gold-tone inner slip.
Condition report:
The paper shows significant overall toning and yellowing consistent with age. There is distinct mount burn and acid staining at the margins. Scattered foxing spots are visible across the paper and within the image areas. The watercolour pigments exhibit mild fading. The frames show minor surface wear and retain adhesive labels.
